Abstract

Background
We conducted a retrospective series to comparing the outcomes of total knee arthroplasty using the intramedullary compared to extramedullary tibial cutting jigs.
Patients and Methods
We included 300 patients with advanced knee osteoarthritis, 115 patients were in the extramedullary group (group 1) and 145 patients in the intramedullary group (group 2).
Results
The mean postoperative WOMAC score was 80 in group 1 and 82 in group 2. The median postoperative VAS score was six and seven in group 1 and 2 respectively (Table 3). Two patients developed wound complications in group 1 compared to two patients in group 2. Two patients developed wound infection in group 2 with no wound infection in group 1. There were no difference in range of motion between groups.
Conclusions
There was no difference in functional outcome scores between intramedullary and extramedullary tibial alignment in total knee arthroplasty.
